that empty canoe reminds me of that story in the papers from the aussie outback about the guy who came off his horse, got all concussed and dazed, couldn't find the way home, horse lead him into swamp, two giant crocks stalked him so he had to run up a tree and strap himself to the branches with a leather harness he was lucky to be carrying... there he remained for a WEEK with no food but 2 sandwiches (wonder how long THEY lasted!) having to use his tobacco tin to flash signals at passing helecopters which managed to miss him many times. But he did get found in the end after spreading toilet paper out all over the top branches ...
... & he was married to an aborigine and looked like a real crocodile dundee
