Once again the Rose Sawfly has invaded the Open Arms Rose; why it only attacks this rose I don't know...exactly the same thing happened last year.....maybe the name "OPEN ARMS" entices it!!
the grubs strip the branches in no time...
such a shame as the rose is still flowering beautifully.....
I'm not going to use any chemicals....this late in the year I'm just pruning the affected branches back.

maybe spraying insecticides will help? though a kind of lovely rose..have a great Sunday!

What a shame this rose has those insects. i like the colour of the petals. I keep guinea fowl and they are great at keeping the insect population down but can be very noisey!

Just a thought Ruth, if you could attract Birds to that area at this time of year, maybe even pick a few of the bugs off and leave them by a feeding station the birds might take a fancy to them. I have Blue, Great, and Long Tailed Tits that visit the Silver birch trees behind my house when ever the caterpillars are about. Then of course there's the Gardeners Friend the Robin... he loves a juicy caterpillar.

What a shame! I hope you can find a way to get rid of that nasty bug.
ReplyDeleteTwo of my roses have had such visitors. I've picked them by hand whenever I saw one: I don't want to use chemicals because of the birds. And the roses have recovered quickly. But I agree, they can damage a rose a high speed.

Getting an infestation can be heart breaking.
I like the idea of attracting birds.
I keep feeders all over the place and it really helps.
I get things tha eat my roses too, only they're big and with four legs and they're called deer.

ReplyDeleteStrange how it attacks the same plant year after year. I think you are doing the right thing by pruning, as its much cheaper. Do you ahave a bird table you could put the caterpillars on?

Sorry about those garden pests, Ruth! I have two roses that also succumb, both supposed to be very hardy and relatively pest free here. If I discover a solution to the problem, I'll be sure to clue you in.

Wanted to stop by and say hello. I have been missing in action due to personal issues in my life. I neglected the friends I met through my blogs and that I regret and apologize to each of you. The personal issues caused me to sink into depression and anxiety and withdraw from life for a while. I have begun the process of resolving those issues and getting back to life.
