IN PRAISE OF......SCHIZANTHUS PINNATUS

In flower in our garden today.

Schizanthus are very showy annuals also called "Butterfly Flower", "Fringe Flower"or "Poor Man's Orchid." They are easy to grow from seed.

12-18 in. (30-45 cm)

Spacing:
9-12 in. (22-30 cm)

Hardiness:
Not usually hardy in Britain

Position:
Sun (preferable) to Partial shade

I hate that phrase "poor man's ... " anything. They've used that about amaryllis as well.

Nothing poor about those blooms you pictured!

What beautiful flowers! The English climate must be so good for them. Here in New Jersey I feel as if it is hard to grow anything - it gets so hot and dry in the summer. We just transplanted some rose bushes and I think two of them aren't going to make it. I remember being in Scotland once and seeing the most tremendous rose bushes. They were totally happy in their cooler climate.

Wow, that Schizanthus is very pretty, I've never heard of it before (what a pity).

By the way, thanks for your nice comment on my pottery balls. Yes you are right - I already got some enquiries, other gardeners would be interested in buying them... ;-)) I am thinking of selling one ball on ebay soon.... ';-)
